Concussion Management

Proper management of a concussion includes a physical evaluation to rule out complicating factors. Appropriate rest and activity modification will allow the injured tissue to recover more quickly. In some cases, patients that have been given enough time for tissue healing to occur continue to have concussion-like symptoms which may include:

  • Migraine
  • Headache
  • Neck pain
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Nausea

In many cases, a cervical injury can occur along with the concussion and produce these symptoms. The AMERICAN HEADACHE INSTITUTE, we assess the role of the cervical spine and design a treatment program for each patient’s specific needs.

A recent study regarding post concussion patients found that adding appropriate cervical exercise, posture and activity modifications, and appropriate vestibular techniques was significantly better than rest alone. (Schneider)
